Casa Rosa y El Conejo [11.11.07]

«Day Before | Day After »

Spent most of the day touring around Coyoacán. It's a cool old neighborhood in Mexico City that was once the home of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky. We started our tour visiting Casa Azul the home of Frida, which is now converted into a museum. After wandering around the quiet residential streets we stumbled upon a big flea market in a warehouse. It seemed to offer everything under one roof -- vendors were selling clothes, home goods, fruits, birds, glasses, shoes, you name it. Much of it was cheap stuff imported from China, so not really handmade crafts a tourist would want. However, I did find a cool Nacho Libre Mexican wrestling mask.

Next destination was Plaza Hidalgo and Jardín Centenario. This is the main center of the community which turns into an open-air market on the weekends. The place was buzzing with activity. Kids running around in front of the old church, couples dancing to a live band, Aztec dancers performing smoke rituals, and just lots of people out enjoying a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon. After strolling around the plaza we settled in for lunch at Los Danzantes a fantastic contemporary Mexican restaurant. I started my meal with a bowl of Sopa Veracruz, a seafood soup consisting a clear green chile broth with shrimp, octopus, mussels, and fish. For my entree I had Arroz con Crema, a creamy rice dish with mushrooms and a good bit of chile. This of course I washed down with a Michelada. A great meal to end the trip. It was such an enjoyable day that I sort of lost track of time and the 6pm flight departure. Since it was nearly 4pm we were cutting it close given the 30 minute subway ride back to the hotel, the 30 minute cab ride to the airport, and who knows how long to check-in and clear security. Although, a bit rushed we made the gate in time and boarded our flight for the return home.
